Description
A daughter of a Viking Queen who was a converted christian. After her mother died
she fled the Irish country side with her mother’s dowery. Her father a pagan chieftain vowed to find her and marry her.
The teenager, with the help of a priest, eventually landed around the area of Belgium. Here she immediately began helping others less fortunate and used her currencies to establish homes and hospitals for the people suffering mental illnesses. Meanwhile her father began tracking where the money from the dowery was spent on her long journey. And after 6 months to a year he was able to track and find her. When he landed her priest protecter went to pled for her and was immediately murdered. When the father confronted Dymphna for her to marry him and return to the area he reigned, she refused and he beheaded her. After he left the grieving friends and people she had helped, secured her remains in a remote cave. After some time her remains were part of sacred reliquaries fashioned for The Roman Catholic Church. A hospital for mental patients would be built and expanded upon for treatment and therapies for mental disorders and homelessness. The timeline for her story is around 700-900AD. And, there are more than a few versions of what happened and how her legend would grow.
I just have presented some of the details that stood out in my research, and is not in any means meant to be the word for word of what actually took place. Her story really seemed to begin when her mother parted ways with the ancient beliefs of her ancestors. At a critical time when Christianity and the “Cult of the Virgin” was being spread. Her “Myth” and interesting background can be traced back to Ancient Greek Legend as well. It is for sure that this young lady is a beloved child. I learned that many hospitals, clinics, and reform programs are named after her all over the globe. Among her many attributes are being a faithful believer of Jesus Christ, the Lily flower, a lite lamp, worldly virtues, her crown, a throne, a sword or cutting blade, intricate knots and kinds of jewelry, agriculture and nature, all this and more along the powerful attribute of being a Demon Slayer.
I have been commissioned to do this painting from a psychologist friend of mine who is has his practice in a large office setting with other doctors and therapist under his “wing” , in a medical clinic with other specialist in the city. He explained to me something about her and that he would like a portrait. I went to my studio, (more in the country) and began learning about Dymphna, I started by drawing what turned out to be a motherly sketch, then I really concentrated and spent time concentrating and actually “channeling” a sketch., also using some figurative drawings done from live models. I’d do several sketches and drawings. The one this painting is based on I had my eyes closed the whole time I was doing the drawing., and periodically I would open my eyes to erase or change things., this would go on for 8-10 hours strait. I do plan on showing this drawing in this site as well soon. It turned out that I did another interesting drawing in this way of “channeling” and it set up what was to become another larger painting., Different from this portrait, but still a representation of The Saint Dymphna. This is a painting that represents her Soul and Divinity and I worked on it the same time I painted this one, her Body and Blood portrait. Thru out the course of a year or so I’d spend 3-5 hours a day sometimes longer on the two pictures. This became my project for the year 2020 while society was being told to try not to leave home or work from home when possible. I rent my studio for now and then in 2020 I felt fortunate to be able to get to know my subject St.Dymphna. After all the very things she helps with, mental disorders, anxiety and nervousness has been going on in heavy order around here through the pandemic. And, I have to say it has been a pleasure working on it, and it helped me to stay calm and focused throughout everything else going on. And, I sure hope this image of St. Dymphna will do that for others as well. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your interest in her and in my artwork.
